A Special Filmmaker’s Cut of Saving The Night Caller
WorkCabin Films has produced a special Saving The Night Caller (Filmmaker’s Cut), a version that allows us to continue to tell this inspiring conservation story about researchers from Birds Canada and the University of Waterloo who are studying the Eastern Whip-poor-will.
We’ve invested our own time, resources, securing broadcast rights, and meeting broadcast requirements on Saving The Night Caller (Filmmaker’s Cut) because we believe in the power of this story and in the researchers who made it possible. This special version will allow us to reach new audiences in 2026 and beyond at community screenings, festivals, broadcast, streaming, and conservation events.

Through cinematic storytelling and emotional narration, viewers embark on an intimate, shoulder-to-shoulder journey with Birds Canada wildlife biologists and University of Waterloo researchers. This short film reveals what it means to fight for a species most people never see but will miss when it’s gone. It’s not just a documentary; it’s a testament to the people, their passion, and the long, often sleepless hours spent in the field gathering vital data. Offering a front-row seat to the grit and heart behind conservation science, the film deepens appreciation for the relentless work required to ensure these species continue calling through the night for generations to come.
At its core, this version of Saving The Night Caller (Filmmaker’s Cut) is about honouring the work being done on the ground and helping more people feel connected to it. If it inspires support for bird research and conservation beyond this one story, then it will have done its job.
Saving The Night Caller (Filmmaker’s Cut) will help us reach new audiences through film festivals, community screenings, conservation events, and other platforms. It also opens meaningful opportunities for bird research organizations to raise funds for bird conservation. We truly believe that this documentary has the emotional, accessible storytelling that can spark curiosity and connection. Screenings lead to conversations. Conversations lead to support. And support often leads to the funding that research organizations rely on.
“If this film helps a research group gain momentum, secure funding, or reach people who didn’t know this species was in trouble, then that impact goes far beyond us as filmmakers,” says WorkCabin Films co-producer Cynthia Brink.
WorkCabin Films filmmaker Gregg McLachlan agrees.
“Our hope is simple: that this story helps bird research teams across Canada feel seen and helps others understand why their work matters.”
At its core, Saving The Night Caller (Filmmaker’s Cut) is about honouring the people doing the work and the species that needs our attention. And for future conservation partners, it also reflects WorkCabin Films’ commitment to telling stories that leave audiences with something to carry long after the screen fades.
